Maiden Mother Crone CIC is working to secure the future of St Ronan's Wells, a sacred and historic site in Innerleithen.
Our vision is to steward this unique space as a living threshold — a place where our Celtic heritage becomes accessible, where intangible cultural traditions find their physical anchor, and where community and sacred practice meet. This is the work we exist to do.

The BorderLands

The leadership team of Maiden Mother Crone CIC brings over 40 years of dedicated community development and cultural heritage work across the Scottish Borders. We have a proven track record of delivering impactful programmes in schools, community groups, and cultural initiatives throughout the region. While our registered office is in Hawick, our commitment, expertise, and lived experience are deeply embedded in the Borderlands—a region we understand as the very heart of the "in-between".

We believe that St Ronan's Wells, as a potent symbol of this liminality and deep heritage, deserves a future rooted in stewardship, community benefit, and principled cultural engagement, not short-term commercial gain.

Saving St Ronan's

This is a defining moment for St Ronan's Wells. On announcement of it's permanent closure, community ownership is the only way to ensure this irreplaceable site is protected for generations to come, serving as a hub of living heritage, well-being, and community connection.

But we cannot do it alone. The success of our Community Asset Transfer bid depends on demonstrating strong, widespread community support.
Your voice is crucial.

Let's come together in Saving St Ronan's.

Who we are - Maiden Mother Crone CIC

Stewarding Heritage for Community Benefit

Maiden Mother Crone Community Interest Company (CIC) is a non-profit social enterprise dedicated to helping people, communities, and organisations reconnect with the deeper dimensions of life through intangible cultural heritage, particularly in the Scottish Borders. We believe that by honouring our Celtic heritage and ReMembering the "in-between" spaces—those places and traditions that bridge fixed points; past and present, tangible and intangible—we can foster profound individual and collective transformation.

Our Track Record: 50 Years in the Scottish Borders

Our leadership team brings over 50 years of extensive experience in community development, cultural programming, and heritage engagement across the Scottish Borders. This includes a proven history of:

  • Educational Workshops: Delivering engaging programmes in schools and youth groups, connecting young people with local heritage and creative expression.

  • Community Initiatives: Collaborating with diverse community groups on projects that build social cohesion and address local needs.

  • Cultural Preservation: Documenting, celebrating, and reviving intangible cultural heritage conservation and practices unique to the Borderlands.

  • Strategic Partnerships: Forging strong relationships with local authorities, cultural organisations, and community stakeholders.

Our deep roots in the region provide us with an unparalleled understanding of its unique character, its people, and its rich traditions. We are not just visitors; we are active participants in the life of the Borderlands, and our work consistently aims to uplift and empower its communities.

Our Governance: A Principled and Transparent Approach

Maiden Mother Crone is legally constituted as a Community Interest Company (CIC), Limited by Guarantee (Company Number: SC779023). This robust and transparent governance structure ensures that:

  • Community Benefit is Paramount: Our core mission is legally enshrined to use our assets and any surpluses generated for the public good, not private profit.

  • Asset Lock Protection: A fundamental feature of our CIC status is the "asset lock." This legal mechanism guarantees that any assets transferred to our ownership, such as St Ronan's Wells, will be permanently dedicated to community benefit and can never be sold off for private gain. This provides an ironclad guarantee against commercial exploitation.

  • Democratic Control: As a member-led organisation, our members (drawn from both the geographic and interest-based communities) elect our Board of Directors, ensuring our strategic direction remains accountable to the community we serve.

  • Ethical and Sustainable Operations: Our governance framework mandates a commitment to long-term sustainability, balancing our heritage stewardship with innovative and ethical operational models, including the support of St Ronan's Well and Water Co Ltd for commercial activities that directly fund our community mission.

We are committed to the highest standards of transparency and accountability, ensuring that St Ronan's Wells will be a vibrant, protected, and accessible resource for current and future generations.
